The RAISE project was initiated by WONDERwoman Raphaella Gabrasadig in 2010. Raphaella taught Maths Uganda for three weeks and was inspired by the ambition of the students regardless of their resources. So alongside like-minded friends Keno Maseli and Olive Ahmed, they decided to start the RAISE project which aims to raise the aspirations of teenage girls and to encourage them to fulfill their potential.
The project started at Bishop Challoner School in Tower Hamlets with 17 young girls. The scheme was based around the Seven Habits of Highly Successful Teenagers by Sean Covey and involved weekly workshops where the students gained the skills to enable them to reach their potentials. Other events included a trip to Cambridge University and a Self Image workshop.
The project culminated in an exciting prize giving day that commenced with lunch at Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Restaurant in Old Street followed by a Career networking session with young professionals in a variety of industries. The prizes were given by guest speaker and child prodigy, Anne- Marie Imafidon (pictured), who provided the girls with tips for academic success and wished them the best for the future.
One of the highlights of the project was receiving the Annual Award of Distinction by the Excellence in Education Organisation, at the House of Lords in recognition of its contribution to the community.
The project is now run by WONDERwomen Olive Ahmed and Keno Maseli. In 2012, they hope to continue to help the girls maximise their potential by focusing on helping them develop career goals and enrich their CV’s through work experience and volunteering opportunities.
The long term goal of RAISE is to provide continuing support as the girls transition from GCSE level to A Levels and ultimately to facilitate access to university through assisting with applications and access to funding.
